The new default: agents that close tickets end to end
If you read the MSP press lately, the pitch is everywhere. Vendors are treating autonomous L1 resolution as the norm, creating a ticket only when a human is actually needed. Some cite 40 to 60 percent of ticket volume as in scope for autonomous closure, and password resets alone as roughly 18 percent of tier one. The story sells itself: hand L1 to an agent, and your billable hours shift to project work.
As an owner-operator, I get the appeal. Nobody wants to pay a tech to reset passwords at 9am. But there is a quieter question underneath the demo, and it is the one that matters at month-end.
Whose system got paid, and who owns “resolved”?
An agent that closes tickets end to end has to run somewhere. It runs on a PSA, it reads your queue, and it writes the resolution note automatically. So the vendor holding the queue also owns the audit trail, and controls what “resolved” means.
Think about what that costs you. When a client disputes a bill, the resolution record is your evidence. When an auditor asks how a ticket was closed, that history is the proof. When you eventually want to leave, the queue, the notes and the closure logic are the thing you cannot easily take with you. If a cloud landlord writes your resolution notes, your book of business quietly becomes theirs.
How Opentra treats AI: scoped, honest, yours
Opentra is PSA-only and self-hosted, single-tenant, on hardware you control. Your monitoring stays yours. Our position on AI is deliberately narrow.
We use Anthropic Claude in two shipped places, and only two:
- AI-drafted narrative in monthly client service reports, with a deterministic fallback, so a failed call never blocks your run.
- “Extract from ticket” to pull scheduled tasks out of ticket text.
That is it. There is no autonomous agent closing your queue and no bot deciding what “resolved” means on your behalf. AI drafts, you own the send. You own the ticket history, you own the resolution record, and you choose if and when AI touches a workflow at all.
The ownership test
Before you hand L1 to any agent, ask one thing: if this vendor disappeared tomorrow, could you export your full resolution history and keep operating? With Opentra the answer is yes. Nothing stops, and you can export your data.
Self-hosted or hosted, the pricing is flat: Community is free to self-host, Pro is $149/mo, and Opentra Cloud is $249/mo, all with unlimited techs and client orgs. No per-seat tax on the tickets your AI does not touch.
