A new meter is coming for your queue
There is a quiet shift happening in ticketing, and if you run a small MSP it is worth watching before it lands in your PSA.
AI-agent vendors are moving away from per-seat pricing toward per-resolution, or outcome-based, billing. Industry write-ups now peg the going rate at roughly $0.50 to $2.00 per resolved ticket. Intercom’s Fin charges about $0.99 per resolution, Zendesk sits near $1.50, and Salesforce Agentforce lands around $2.00. Meanwhile, seat-based AI pricing reportedly fell from 21% to 15% of companies inside a year, with seat-only vendors increasingly disqualified from deals.
On paper, “pay for outcomes” sounds fair. In practice, watch who holds the definitions.
Who decides what “resolved” means?
Here is the catch. When a PSA bolts AI into the ticket queue and bills you per resolution, two things are no longer yours.
First, every AI-touched ticket becomes a billable event flowing to the vendor. Your queue turns into their revenue line. Second, and worse, “resolution” is defined by the vendor, not you. A ticket the customer reopens, a canned reply that did not actually fix anything, an auto-close on a stale thread: any of these can count as a billable win for someone who is not you.
You did the work, or your automation did. The meter still ticks toward their invoice.
That is the per-seat tax wearing a new hat. Same idea, metered a different way: your growth, your volume, your success, all converted into a variable bill you do not control.
Opentra’s answer: flat, and you decide
Opentra is flat fee, full stop. Community is free to self-host, Pro is $149/mo, and Opentra Cloud is $249/mo. Unlimited techs, unlimited client orgs, no per-resolution meter layered on your queue. Resolve one ticket or ten thousand this month: your price does not move.
Our AI is honest and scoped. It is Anthropic Claude, and it does two things: it drafts the narrative in your monthly client service reports, and it extracts structured detail from a single ticket for scheduled tasks. Both have a deterministic fallback if you want it. You choose if and when AI touches a workflow. It is not an autonomous agent silently closing tickets and stacking billable events against your name.
That is the difference between AI as a tool you own and AI as a toll booth on your own work.
Own the workflow, not a bill per win
We build Opentra to run our own shop first, so we feel every one of these design choices before you do. Flat pricing is not a promo. It is the whole point: the system your work runs on, from first email to paid invoice, without a landlord metering your wins.
