The clock you did not set
Kaseya is retiring VSA 9. Its own migration guidance frames the move to Datto RMM as essential, and it routes Datto contracting, support and billing through Kaseya and the Kaseya 365 bundle. If you run a small shop on VSA 9, read that carefully: a vendor you pay has decided your tool is ending, picked your replacement, and started the clock.
That is the lock-in trap in motion. Not M&A theory, not a slide about consolidation. A named, in-progress product sunset forcing a migration on someone else’s schedule, with the contract and the billing herded into a bundle you may not have chosen.
Who decides when you move?
When the thing your business runs on lives on a vendor’s cloud, the answer is: not you. They decide the end-of-life date. They decide the migration path. They decide the new price and the new bundle. You get an email and a deadline.
For an owner-operator juggling tickets, billing and integrations, that is not a minor inconvenience. It is a re-platform you did not budget for, dropped into your month-end run.
The system your work runs on should never be retired underneath you
Here is the Opentra line, and we mean it literally. Opentra is a PSA: tickets, contracts, time tracking, projects and invoicing, from first email to paid invoice. It is self-hosted and single-tenant. It runs on hardware you control.
What happens if Opentra disappears? Nothing stops. The code is on your box, your data is yours, and you can export it. No vendor can retire, re-platform or re-price the system underneath you on their calendar, because the system is already yours.
We don’t do RMM. That’s the point.
Notice what Kaseya’s move bundles together: monitoring, PSA, billing, all in one cloud suite, one throat to choke and one vendor to set your timeline. We go the other way on purpose.
Opentra does one job completely, the PSA, and leaves your monitoring to you. Your RMM is your call. Bring Level.io, ScreenConnect, NinjaOne, whatever you run. Their alerts ingest as billable tickets so the work still lands in your pipeline and makes it to the invoice. When your RMM vendor sunsets something, you swap the RMM. Your PSA, your contracts, your history, your billing all keep running.
Own the layer that cannot be taken
You cannot control every vendor’s roadmap. You can control which layer of your shop is yours to keep. Make it the PSA, the one that touches every ticket and every invoice.
Flat pricing, every tier: Community is free to self-host, Pro is $149/mo, Opentra Cloud is $249/mo. Unlimited techs and client orgs, no per-seat tax.
